The Process
The Transform initiative went through a transparent and simple 4-step process which is designed to identify, select, validate and action a range of projects from across the textiles industry. This phased approach is intended to identify and validate the most appropriate projects that can deliver results in the time frame.
A critical part of the process was the use of Locus Research 'Product Development Specification' (PDS) process.
Step One: Identification
Step one focuses on identifying potential projects, companies, and technologies that could be involved in the initiative. Textiles New Zealand received a wide range of proposals from across the textiles industry.
All proposals are handled in strict confidence and remain the property of the proposer.
Funding Source: Textiles New Zealand
Step Two: Selection
Proposals and registrations of interest are investigated and evaluated by Textiles New Zealand and an External Advisory Panel (EAP). Project proposals will be assessed against the criteria which takes into account the ability of each project to successfully deliver export growth.
Funding Source: Textiles New Zealand
Step Three: Validation
The validation phase is an initial 2-3 month research phase which will investigate the product and the market context of the proposal, along with developing a 'Product Development Specification' (PDS) for the selected projects. The PDS will define the framework and development strategy for each individual project, along with the key market, design, production, business, and budget requirstrongents, to ensure that the risks are clearly outlined and understood.

Step Four: Action
Projects that are approved to proceed are then moved into the action phase. Projects are regularly reviewed to track progress against performance and planning targets.
The action phase is focused on implementing the Product Design Specifications and commercialising new product within a 12-24 month time frame.

Testimonials
“Robust and thorough, reflecting the objective of supporting the development of transformational technology that would be a sound commercial proposition ... the support network put in place to assist companies through the process has been outstanding. We have a very exciting project underway and believe the long term benefits to the industry will be far reaching.”Verne Attmore — Levana Textiles.
“Zephyr Technology has found the Transform initiative a great process to facilitate the development of textile based technology for New Zealand companies; enabling the application of research that will follow through to commercial deliverables.”Jonathan Woodward — CTO, Zephyr Technology Ltd.
“The Foundation has worked closely with Locus Research to ensure the normal rigorous contestable selection process it uses for all of its research and development investments was fairly applied to the Transform Initiative. The initial proposals selected represented a good cross-section of projects that would deliver transformational benefits to both the companies involved and New Zealand.”Craig Holmes — Strategy Manager: New Materials, Technologies & Services, FRST
